Shipping Container - 3D Scan Inspection

Mission Summary

  • Goal:  Test manual camera settings for low light conditions
  • Tech: DJI Phantom 3 4K, Drone Deploy
  • Conditions: Evening (low light)
  • Outcome: Adjusting the camera settings to low light conditions was a success.

BBQ - 3D Scan

Mission Summary

  • Goal:  Test photogrammetry from a smartphone
  • Tech: iPhone8s, Autodesk ReCap
  • Conditions: Midday and raining
  • Outcome: Smartphone camera can be a powerful tool for reality capture

We were down at the local park for an afternoon walk, when I went to test some simple photogrammetry methodology using my smartphone daughter decided she wanted to be part of the scan.

This (IMO) was a successful scan.

Golden Pipeline - 3D Scan Inspection

Pipeline Inspection

Mission Summary

  • Goal:  Determine of drone imagery is effective for pipeline inspection purposes
  • Tech: DJI Phantom 3 4K, Drone Deploy
  • Conditions: Early Afternoon and sunny
  • Outcome: Drone imagery enables quick and accurate analysis and it also shows the larger field-scale trends that can go unseen at ground level

It was a gorgeous winter day so we packed the family up (along with a thermos and tea) and headed east to the fringes of the wheat belt with the aim of finding an un-shaded length of the iconic Golden Pipeline to scan. I have previously had two failed attempts of scanning the pipeline, both of these done closer to the city and in areas with far more tree cover.

Photogrammetry scan of tree (and daughter) using an iPhone
You can see that  whilst she assures me she did not move a muscle there is still some slight distortion around her body, whilst the tree is in near perfect focus. I guess this demonstrates how sensitive the technique is to even the slightest movement. Also see video below;
